Turkey Temptations
-
Thanksgiving is fast approaching! Hopefully a time spent with family and friends involving lots of food and libations. Tempting times for our canine companions. Many dogs think our guest's shoes make great chew toys and often the cookies they bring us look just like dog treats. So whatÕs a dog owner to do?? Here are a few pointers to get you through without a trip to the vet or the shoe store! Your greatest tool is management. Use baby gates or a crate to keep your dog confined. Put them on leash and tie it around your wait or to your belt loop if food is within reach. Have a supply of new toys, bully sticks, and Kong toys filled with yummy stuff to keep your pooch occupied during times of commotion. A tired dog is a good dog so burn their energy prior to the party or before you leave him alone in the house. Remember that training for 10 minutes is worth 30 minutes of exercise. Take their regular kibble out of the bowl and use it for training while youÕre cleaning the house or cooking for the festivities. This will tire your dog's mind as well as get him used to doing the right thing around his greatest temptations. You can also use treats for training when guests arrive (buy the pumpkin ones if you want to be in the spirit!). This is a great time to practice sit for greeting by giving your guest a treat and having them ask your dog to sit. Make sure you are enforcing a no sit, no pet rule. Finally, if you think Fido isn't the kind of dog that enjoys social situations, it may be better to take him to a friend's house or a boarding facility. Don't forget that while you are enjoying your Thanksgiving, we are working! If you don't have time to walk your dog or you are invited out of the house for Thanksgiving, make an appointment for Home Buddies to check on and walk your dog.
